Why Fukuoka?

Fukuoka consistently ranks as Japan's most liveable city — friendlier than Tokyo, cheaper than Osaka, and closer to Seoul than either. The city pioneered the yatai open-air food stall culture, is the birthplace of Hakata ramen and mentaiko (spicy fish roe), and sits just 3 hours by hydrofoil from Busan. It rewards slow travel and rewards eating.

Recommended 3-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive & Nakasu Night Stalls

  • Afternoon: Arrive at Fukuoka Airport (subway 5 min to Hakata) or Hakata Port (ferry from Busan)
  • Evening: Nakasu Yatai — line of open-air stalls along the Naka River. Order ramen, yakitori, and draft beer while chatting with locals

Day 2 — Ohori Park & Tenjin

  • Morning: Ohori Park — peaceful lakeside walk + Maizuru Park (Fukuoka Castle ruins)
  • Lunch: Tenjin underground shopping arcade food court
  • Afternoon: Tenjin shopping — Iwataya department store, Japanese fast fashion
  • Evening: Motsu-nabe hot pot restaurant (beef offal in miso or soy broth — Fukuoka's winter staple)

Day 3 — Dazaifu & Departure

  • Morning: Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine — deity of learning; try umegae-mochi (grilled rice cakes with red bean) at stalls along the approach path
  • Lunch: Café in the historic precinct
  • Afternoon: Return to Hakata for onward travel

Must-Try Foods

  1. Hakata ramen — thick, milky tonkotsu pork bone broth; Ichiran and Ippudo both started here
  2. Yatai street stalls — Nakasu riverside and Tenjin stalls open evenings only; arrive by 7pm for a seat
  3. Motsu-nabe — beef or pork offal hot pot; collagen-rich, warming, deeply savoury
  4. Mentaiko — Fukuoka's signature spicy pollock roe; buy at Hakata Station as a gift
  5. Mizutaki — chicken collagen hot pot; dip in ponzu, finish with zosui rice porridge
