Why Okinawa?

Okinawa is Japan but not quite Japan — a subtropical island chain 2.5 hours from Tokyo and just over 2 hours direct from Seoul. The coral reefs rank among Asia's clearest, the islands belonged to the independent Ryukyu Kingdom until 1879, and the local food, music, and dialect remain distinctly their own. Winter temperatures hover around 18–20°C, making it a warm-weather escape even in January.

Recommended 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1 — Naha City & Shuri Castle

  • Morning: Arrive at Naha Airport → Yui Rail monorail 20 min to city centre

  • Afternoon: Kokusai Street shopping — Ryukyu glassware, pottery, shisa guardian lion figurines
  • Evening: Okinawan izakaya — Orion beer, sea grapes (umibudo), and rafute braised pork belly

Day 2 — Churaumi Aquarium & North

  • Morning: Drive or bus north (~2 hours) to Churaumi Aquarium — one of the world's largest tanks housing whale sharks and manta rays

  • Snorkel option: Organised tours from Naha depart early morning; reef snorkelling in waters averaging 25m+ visibility

Day 4 — Gyokusendo Cave & Departure

  • Morning: Okinawa World — Gyokusendo limestone cave (890m open to visitors) + Eisa folk dance performance
  • Lunch: 2nd-floor restaurants at Makishi Public Market — buy fresh fish downstairs, have it cooked upstairs

Must-Try Foods

  1. Okinawa soba — thicker wheat noodles in a hybrid pork-bonito broth; topped with soki (braised spare rib)
  2. Goya champuru — bitter melon stir-fried with tofu, egg, and spam; the island's signature home dish
  3. Rafute — thick pork belly braised for hours in awamori spirit and soy; meltingly tender
  4. Umibudo — sea grapes, tiny pearls of ocean flavour that pop; eat fresh with ponzu
  5. Blue Seal ice cream — Okinawa-born chain; beni-imo (purple sweet potato) is the must-try flavour
